Where the Past Meets the Present

Winton’s Sacred Waterholes

As is the case with many Australian towns and cities histories, where they exist today may not have been their original location. Such is the case with the township of Winton.

We first meet with our Vision Splendid Dreamtime Guide at the Musical Fence Café for morning tea and an orientation to the local history of the first nation peoples.  We then board the Gidgee Truck, with our first stop being Pelican Waterhole, local wetlands.

‘Pelican’ was in fact the original name given to the township that was to eventually be known as Winton. Here we will stop for a brief walk around and an informative yarn about the shared history of this special place.

Following our Pelican Waterhole visit we will then make our way to the Fig Tree Waterhole. This sacred place is the home of Butterfly Dreaming of the Koa peoples. This was a place to prepare for ceremony where individuals went through tests and trials to re-emerge just as the caterpillar does into a renewed identity.

Here we will visit the ochre pits and learn how the Koa people whom were among the world’s first miners, mined and ground ochre for the purpose of body and rock painting.  We will then visit the various rock art sites that surround the waterhole with interpretations presented by the Dreamtime Guide as well as have some time to sit and reflect in the stillness and the quiet of the Australian Outback.

Time now to return to Winton and the famous North Gregory hotel for a themed lunch prepared by the chef at the North Gregory Hotel at the renowned 20th century artist Daphne Mayo Dining Room.

After lunch options are the “Where Animal Creator Meets Human Creator” Boomerang Masterclass or to join the “Where the Ranges Meet the Night Sky” Rangeland’s night sky tour.
